Prospective Study of the Functional Recovery After Surgery for Thoracic Outlet Syndrome

Abstract: DASH questionnaire is a valid and objective test for evaluating the functional state after TOS surgery. Venous TOS is clinically less incapacitating than neurogenic. Surgically decompression of thoracic outlet leads to significant benefit in patients with neurogenic TOS.

“…The great majority of cases are within the 2nd and the 4th decades [2-4, 7-9, 12]. Although some reports indicate a slight preference, female patients are more common [3,4,[7][8][9]12]. In our series the average age was 31.9±11.7 years, and there was a female predominance as 5.4:1.…”

“…TOS may be due to many reasons affecting the area including bony anomalies, presence of anomalous soft tissue structures, fractures, inflammation, and local invasion of malignancies [1,[4][5][6][10][11][12]. In our series 14 patients had cervical rib, and eight patients had overgrown C7 transverse process.…”

“…In addition, to evaluate these patients, the standard care level of the patients with thoracic outlet syndrome affiliated to the Rehabilitation Department of The Brighten and Women's Hospital in 2007 has recommended three general measuring scales, including shoulder pain and disability index (SPADI), simple shoulder test (SST), and American shoulder and elbow surgeons (ASES). Moreover, the "arm, shoulder, and hand" questionnaire has been used in some studies conducted on the patients with thoracic outlet syndrome [20][21][22]. In Table 1, the characteristics of the resources and in Table 2, two characteristics on evaluating the treatment outcomes [23][24][25][26] are presented.…”

“…Axillary-subclavian vein effort thrombosis (Paget-Schroetter syndrome) has also been considered as the most frequently encountered vascular disorder [26], and there have been two cases of venous thrombosis in major league pitchers Health [5] [24]. Since the incidence rate of vascular TOS (arterial or venous) has been reported to be less than 5% of all TOS [27] [28] [29], it is estimated that many overhead-throwing athletes may be affected with neurogenic TOS.…”
