Prospects for Indirect Dark Matter Searches with the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA)

Abstract: For the CTA Consortium https://www.cta-observatory.org/The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) will have a unique chance of discovery for a large range of masses in Weakly Interacting Massive Particles models of dark matter. The principal target for dark matter searches with CTA is the centre of the Galactic Halo. The best strategy is to perform CTA observations within a few degrees of the Galactic Centre, with the Galactic Centre itself and the most intense diffuse emission regions removed from the analysis. “…Projection studies include: CTA 5h [11] for photon-lines from GC (see refs. [41,42] for similar results), CTA 500h [43,44] for photon-continuum from GC, and Fermi-LAT 15 years for photon-continuum from 16 DG [45] (see ref. [46] for CTA projections).…”

“…Fractions of neutralino 1 types in our scan after imposing all the constraints, including also the lower relic density limit. For indirect detection, the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) [213], dedicated to gamma rays, will use a Cherenkov imagery technique similar to HESS, VERITAS or MAGIC, and will be able to probe an energy range between a few tenths of GeV to above 100 TeV. Before 2030, CTA will also further push the indirect detection limits by observ-JHEP11(2017)132 ing gamma rays at the center of the Milky Way, as shown in figure 26.…”

“…On the other hand, the indirect detections do not give limits if the annihilation rate is suppressed by the factor ξ 2 th . Exclusion limits on the higgsino dark matter produced from some non-thermal processes at the Fermi-LAT and the future planned CTA experiments [86] have been discussed in ref. [87].…”
