Prostatic abscesses and severe sepsis due to methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureusproducing Panton-Valentine leukocidin

Abstract: BackgroundProstatic abscesses are an uncommon disease usually caused by enterobacteria. They mostly occur in immunodeficient patients. It is thus extremely rare to have a Staphylococcal prostatic abscess in a young immunocompetent patient.Case presentationA 20-year-old patient was treated with ofloxacin for a suspicion of prostatitis. An ultrasonography was performed because of persisting symptoms and showed acute urinary retention and prostatic abscesses. So the empirical antibiotic therapy was modified with … Show more

“…However, these multifocal features were not confirmed in a larger cohort of 16 patients with PVL + Sa pneumonia from the same location 31 . Few case reports have mentioned multiple-site infections or unconventional septic sites, including prostatic or renal abscesses or mediastinitis [32][33][34] .…”

“…More robust data from well-designed and adequately powered studies should become available in order to reach safer conclusions. Finally, few case reports support fosfomycin use, alone or in combination with other antibiotics, for the treatment of patients with acute prostatitis (233)(234)(235).…”

“…In some cases, it can lead to severe sepsis and death [13]. One of the theories proposed for the development of sepsis in PA is Panton-Valentine leucocidin (PVL), which is a toxin produced by Staphylococcus aureus that leads to persistence of infection and aids in the spread of infection [14].…”
