Prosthetic vascular infection complicated or not by aortoenteric fistula: Comparison of treatment with and without cryopreserved allograft (homograft)

Abstract: compared to conventional treatment, incidence of reoperations and length of hospital stay are significantly decreased after cryopreserved allograft implantation. However, closure of aortic stump and extra-anatomic bypass gives better results for patients with AEF.

“…SAEF represents an even more serious condition than an infected aortoiliac prosthetic implant [7]. SAEFs are a rare complication of open aortic surgery with rates that vary between 0.5% and 1.5% of cases [8][9][10].…”

“…However, one can argue whether it is not needed because a higher graft insufficiency rate was reported. Thus the extra-anatomical axillofemoral bypass has been reported to have better long time results [12]. It can be related to cryopreservation damage and lack of immunosuppression either.…”

“…We found no significant difference in the incidence of infection among AAA or AIOD patients, although there were more inguinal infections in the AIOD group. Specific aspects of graft infection have been widely analysed (7)(8)(9)(10)(11)(12)(13). Despite precise prophylactic rules, prosthesis infection still occurs with an on-going debate about the optimal treatment.…”
