Corrosion inhibitors have traditionally been utilised to protect copper alloy sculptures from corrosion despite the recognised environmental and human health risks. Knowing the associated toxicity, ongoing extensive research seeks alternative substances for corrosion reduction, giving rise to the emergence of green inhibitors. In this pursuit, plant extract inhibitors have gained attention, particularly in the heritage field. This review discusses recent advancements in synthesising sustainable and eco-friendly products designed to preserve metallic heritage from corrosion. We discuss the key findings on plant extracts used for corrosion control in metal alloys, taking into account the extraction methods to ensure the comprehensive coverage of relevant details. The use of plant extracts as corrosion inhibitors for metallic materials in cultural heritage (CH) is a highly promising and valuable research area. This review highlights recent advancements in the field, providing utility for conservators, conservation scientists, and restorers in identifying the most effective, eco-friendly, and safe compounds for material application.

One of the alternative materials used for conducting conservation treatment of iron artifacts is the rust converter, since it generates barrier properties and more stable oxides. The protective properties and surface modifications from using Mimosa tenuiflora extract as a green rust converter on a gray iron oxide layer were studied. The surface characterization was carried out using a Scanning Electron Microscope coupled to an energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometer (SEM-EDS), along with infrared spectroscopy (IR), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray Diffraction (XRD), and Water Contact Angle (WCA). Electrochemical characterization was performed with an Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscope (EIS) using 3.5 wt.% NaCl as the electrolyte. According to the results of the Raman spectroscopy and XRD, the layer of corrosion products formed after 90 days in the atmosphere was composed of goethite, lepidocrocite, maghemite, hematite, and magnetite. The surface of the corrosion products was transformed with the rust converter into an amorphous and microcracked layer. By IR, the Fe-O and C-O-Fe bonds associated with the iron chelate were found with absorption bands at 1540 and 1567 cm−1, respectively. By XRD, a modification of the magnetite crystallinity was observed. Finally, the Water Contact Angle and the protective capacity of the corrosion products were improved by the presence of the rust converter.

This study investigates the potential of fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) as environmentally sustainable alternatives to traditional solvents for the removal of low-polarity materials commonly found in cultural heritage artefacts. Recognizing the environmental and health concerns associated with conventional solvents, this research focuses on FAME to remove low/non-polarity or non-polar substances used in cultural heritage preservation. Laboratory samples coated with low molecular synthetic resins (LMW) such as Regalrez 1094 and microcrystalline wax were treated with FAME applied in gel to prevent solvent–substrate interactions. Photographic documentation under UV-vis light, optical microscope observations, and spectrocolorimetric analysis were used for assessing surface “cleanness”, while FTIR-ATR spectroscopy was used to detect possible residue from treatment. Moreover, SEM analysis was used for a better understanding of the results. The best results were obtained using FAME base on methyl stearate according to Hansen-RED.
