Protective effect of adiponectin on paraquat-induced pulmonary fibrosis in mice

Abstract: Pulmonary fibrosis (PF) is the most com mon complication of paraquat (PQ) toxicity, which lacks an effective treatment. This study aimed to inve stigate whether exogenous administration of globular adiponectin (APN) isoform provided protection ag ainst PQinduced PF, and examined the possible me chanisms underlying these effects. Eighty BALB/C mice were randomly divided into control, PQ, low dose APN, and highdose APN groups. Human lung WI-38 fibroblasts were similarly divided into control, PQ, and APN groups a… Show more

“…Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is the irreversible form of the idiopathic interstitial pneumonia that has symptoms of chronic and progressive dyspnea by unknown causes 1 2 . IPF is etiologically characterized with alveolar epithelial cell injury, fibroblast/myofibroblast proliferation, and excessive extracellular matrix (ECM) deposition leading to the destruction of the alveolar structure.…”

“…Three MAPKs; ERK, p38 and JNK, are known to be activated by several external stimulants including ROS and microbial infection [35,36]. MAPKs play an important role in the transcriptional regulation of iNOS, COX-2 and inflammatory cytokines via activation of the transcription factor NFκB in various cells [3739]. In this investigation, the phosphorylated p38, ERK and JNK significantly increased in heat-killed P .…”
