Protective Effects of Human Placenta Extract on Cartilage Degradation in Experimental Osteoarthritis

Abstract: This study investigated the effect of human placenta extract (HPE) on cartilage degradation in vitro MG-63 cells, articular cartilage explants, and in vivo monoiodoacetate (MIA)-induced osteoarthritis (OA). Matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-2 activity was measured in HPE-treated osteoblastic MG-63 cells. Articular cartilage explants in rabbit were cultured, and the degree of proteoglycan (PG) degradation was assessed by measuring the amount of glycosaminoglycan (GAG) released into the culture medium. Experimental… Show more

“…Moreover, the neuronal cells of the hippocampal CA3 region show progressive age‐associated decline (Bronzetti, Felici, Zaccheo, & Amenta, ; Brunson, Eghbal‐Ahmadi, Bender, Chen, & Baram, ; Hioki et al, ). It was expected that placental extract may reduce the loss of neuronal cells associated with age, as it is known to have cytoprotective effects (Kawakatsu, Urata, Goto, Ono, & Li, ; Kim et al, ; Liu et al, ). Porcine placental extract has previously been shown to suppress fear memory impairment and Nissl‐positive cell loss in the hippocampal CA3 region induced by restraint stress in ovariectomized mice (Takuma et al, ).…”

“…The initiation of cartilage breakdown is stimulated by mechanical stress or injury and the degenerative process progresses slowly over many years. In the advanced stage of OA, the abnormal remodeling of cartilage and subchondral bone results in the formation of osteophytes at the joint surface and margins, which irreversibly destroys the affected joint (4).…”

“…Посредством рентгенографии, гистологии и оценки активности фермента деградации хряща ММР-2 (желатиназы) показано, что ГПЧ тормозил деградацию протеогликана суставного хряща, значительно снижал деформации суставов и подавлял гистологические изме-нения, характерные для остеоартрита. В частности, актив-ность металлопротеиназы ММР-2 дозозависимо снижа-лась [24] (рис. 5).…”
