Protective Effects of Scutellarin and Breviscapine on Brain and Heart Ischemia in Rats

Abstract: Scutellarin is an active molecule existing in Erigeron breviscapus (vant.) Hand-Mazz. The present work was designed to study the antiischemic effects of scutellarin and its mixture with another substance, breviscapine, in male Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats. Ligature of left anterior descending arteries was performed to induce acute myocardial infarction (MI), and the middle cerebral artery occlusion was created to induce focal cerebral ischemia. The MI size was significantly reduced by scutellarin (15 and 50 mg/kg)… Show more

“…When regards hesperetine, authors indicate on its antiallergic, antidepressant and memory improving effect [45,46]. In turn, scutellarin reveals antihypertensive and antivirus [47,48], while chrysin -antitumor, anxiolytic and anticonvulsant activities [49][50][51][52]. Since all listed flavonoids reveal a strong pharmacological activities, they finally may be engaged in the adaptogenic effect of Scutellariae radix.…”

“…Scutellarin has been extensively used for the clinical treatment of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases in China for many years. Pharmacological research indicates that scutellarin is associated with antihypertrophic effects [1] , fibrinolysis and anticoagulant effects [2] , protective effects in the brain and heart [3] , hypercholesterolemia suppression [4] , and endothelium-independent relaxation induction [5] . Scutellarin produces an anti-inflammatory effect via actions on arachidonic acid metabolism [6] .…”

“…Breviscapine is isolated from the Asteraceae plant E breviscapus and can be prepared as a Chinese patent medicine, where the essential active ingredients are flavones [38,39] . It possesses an anti-platelet and anti-thrombus action and can lower plasma fibrin content and promote fibrinolytic activity.…”
