Protective, restorative, and therapeutic properties of recombinant colony-stimulating factors

Abstract: Pretreatment of mice with recombinant murine (rM) colony-stimulating factor-granulocyte-macrophage (CSF-gm) or recombinant human (rH) CSF-g provides partial protection from the lethal effects of ionizing radiation or the alkylating agent cyclophosphamide (CTX). In addition, these agents can significantly prolong survival if administered following lethal doses of irradiation or CTX. To induce protective activity, cytokines were injected 20 hours before lethal irradiation or CTX administration. To accelerate rec… Show more

“…Production and release of GM-CSF are induced or enhanced by other inflammatory and haemopoietic cytokines like the tumour necrosis factor (TNF), IL-1 and by several mitogens. GM-CSF is a multi-target factor and its physiological role is still ill defined [2,5,7,9,11,13,[16][17][18][19]. It is primarily involved and required in granulocyte and monocyte productions, hence its main target is the colony-forming-unit-granulocyte-macrophage (CFU-GM) cell pool [2, 6, 71.…”
