Protein/CaCO3/Chitin Nanofiber Complex Prepared from Crab Shells by Simple Mechanical Treatment and Its Effect on Plant Growth

Abstract: A protein/CaCO3/chitin nanofiber complex was prepared from crab shells by a simple mechanical treatment with a high-pressure water-jet (HPWJ) system. The preparation process did not involve chemical treatments, such as removal of protein and calcium carbonate with sodium hydroxide and hydrochloric acid, respectively. Thus, it was economically and environmentally friendly. The nanofibers obtained had uniform width and dispersed homogeneously in water. Nanofibers were characterized in morphology, transparency, a… Show more

“…lycopersici , the causative agent of Fusarium wilt disease to tomatoes, were suppressed by adding CNF and CNF composites prepared from crab shells to soils [ 7 ]. However, CNF, per se, was an unusable nitrogen source for growing tomato plants [ 8 ]. CNF application at high concentrations strongly induced disease resistance but simultaneously inhibited plant growth, which may be caused by the tradeoff between growth and defense [ 6 , 9 ].…”

“…Therefore, protein/CaCO 3 /chitin nanofiber complex was successfully obtained from red snow crab shells ( Figure ). [ 66 ] Some scholars [ 67 ] applied the grinding machine to the pretreatment of chitin and studied its effect on the preparation of chitin nanofibers from crab shell powder by the HPWJ system. The crushed chitin can be effectively decomposed into nanofibers after being treated by the HPWJ system, which reduces the treatment cycle of the HPWJ system.…”

“…The extraction of chitin from crustacean shells is well documented in the literature [6], [16], [18][19][20][21][22]. Extraction consists of three major steps; demineralisation, deproteinisation and depigmentation.…”
