“…The nonessential amino acids absorbed fastest were Ala, Glu and Tyr after the EC diet, and Tyr, Glu and Ala after the ECFM diet; the slowest after both diets was Cys. Similarly to mink, (Szymeczko and Skrede, 1990) it can also be noticed in foxes that substituting half of fresh fish protein with fish meal protein increased the rate of absorption of Arg in comparison with Met and Lys. Szymeczko and Burlikowska (1996) pointed out the high digestibility of nitrogen 93.7% and amino acids 90.6% in the distal segment of the small intestine of polar foxes fed on the diet with the 50% content of high quality fish and beef meat proteins.…”

“…Samples of digesta were freeze-dried and ground and, in the case of faeces, sifted to remove hair. (Szymeczko and Skrede, 1990). The experimental diets were: a diet with whole fish protein (WF), a diet in which half of the whole fish protein was replaced with fish meal (WFFM), and a diet with fish meal as the only source of protein (FM).…”

“…The digestive tract of the mink is very simple (Szymeczko and Skrede, 1990) with a low a-amylase enzyme activity (Elnif et al, 1988) and microbial activity (Williams et al, 1998). Therefore, to ensure high digestibility, the dietary carbohydrate supply has to be either monosaccharides or gelatinised starch.…”

“…Although digestibility does not mean the same as availability, digestibility studies have become the most favorite technique for estimating AA availability in different animal species (4). The previous research on polar foxes and mink revealed that, depending on the source of dietary protein, the apparent digestibility of nitrogen and AAs determined in digesta from the terminal part of the small intestine was lower (even by several percentage units) compared to the apparent digestibility measured in feces (5,6). According to Szymeczko et al (6), the total tract digestibility method informs only about the final effect of protein digestion; it does not give a view on the changes of AAs that occur in the large intestine as a result of its bacterial microflora activity and, therefore, may overestimate the amounts of AA absorbed from the digestive tract in dogs, mink, and foxes.…”
