Protein disorder–order interplay to guide the growth of hierarchical mineralized structures

Abstract: A major goal in materials science is to develop bioinspired functional materials based on the precise control of molecular building blocks across length scales. Here we report a protein-mediated mineralization process that takes advantage of disorder–order interplay using elastin-like recombinamers to program organic–inorganic interactions into hierarchically ordered mineralized structures. The materials comprise elongated apatite nanocrystals that are aligned and organized into microscopic prisms, which grow … Show more

“…At the end of 7 d of incubation, the flake-like crystals fully covered the dentin surface and sealed the DTs in-depth (Figure 5g). [4,5,37,38] For instance, the current clinical products, such as Green Or, Hybrid Coat, Gluma Desensitizer, Duraphat ( Figure S22, Supporting Information), and 3M single bond universal adhesive ( Figure S23, Supporting Information), only covered the dentin surface with zero occluded depth inside the DTs. The energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) result reflected that the Ca/P ratio of the regenerated minerals was 1.72, which was assigned to HAp (Figure 5i).…”

“…In addition, amelogenin, enamel matrix derivative, and gelatin were applied to initiate the growth of aligned apatite nanocrystals on enamel [37][38][39] . Furthermore, the disorder-order interplay of elastinlike recombinamers were exploited to enable highly controlled and hierarchical mineralization resembling enamel 40 .…”
