Protein Identification by Database Searching of Mass Spectrometry Data in the Teaching of Proteomics

Abstract: Mass spectrometry is essential for large-scale protein identification in proteomics. By database searching of mass spectrometry data, it is possible to identify proteins without the need to interpret MS/MS spectra (de novo sequencing), which is time-consuming and not feasible as a systematic tool in proteomic analysis. Many authors have reported initiatives to teach protein mass spectrometry to undergraduate students, but database searching is usually not emphasized. Here, we propose a class about database sea… Show more

“…Recent studies have addressed the lack of teaching proteomics and have facilitated coursework to fill this gap. 18,19 This interdisciplinary field, combining molecular biology with analytical chemistry and bioinformatics, may seem challenging to teach at the graduate level. Yet, we consider that the skill-set of chemists or other majors related to life sciences should envelop emerging technologies into their education, either to prepare them well for graduate studies or for careers in industry.…”

“…There are also several instrumental methods, ranging from gel electrophoresis , to mass spectrometry (MS) methods, , which have been used for protein identification and quantification. MS methods are selective and can detect food adulterations with nitrogen-rich compounds .…”
