Protein-Induced Gold Nanoparticle Assembly for Improving the Photothermal Effect in Cancer Therapy

Abstract: Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are promising photothermal agents for cancer therapy. However, the absorption of spherical AuNPs is weak in the desired tissue-penetrating near-infrared (NIR) window, resulting in low photothermal efficiency within this window. Here, we show that fibrous nanostructures assembled from spherical AuNPs since the templating effect of silk fibroin (SF) could red-shift the optical absorption to NIR and thus present improved photothermal efficiency within the NIR window. Specifically, negat… Show more

“…A significant proportion of the literature focuses on exploiting the optical properties of materials to absorb NIR radiation and induce photothermal, chemo‐photothermal, or photodynamic effects. [ 126–132 ] The therapeutic application of this is noninvasive, and can reduce the occurrence of nonspecific toxicity to tissues which do not undergo irradiation. [ 126 ] The rather simple approach of light irradiation in and of itself is insufficient.…”

“…Silk nanofibers containing gold NPs were developed (Wang J. et al, 2019 ). The specific assembly of NPs results in the broader absorption of light in the NIR and a red shift of the maximum.…”

“…We prepared SF solution from B. mori silkworm cocoons according to our previous procedures. 28,29 Briey, cocoons were degummed in a boiling aqueous solution with 0.5 wt% Na 2 CO 3 for removal of sericin coated on the broin bers. SF solution were regenerated by dissolving degummed broin bers into 9.3 M LiBr solution followed by dialyzing against deionized water for 3 days.…”
