“…We have previously examined the evidence for the role of Kurloff cells in the im munology of placentation [9], but the possible involvement of Kurloff cells in immunological processes is still largely speculatvie. Cells having a similar morphology to Kurloff cells have not been demonstrated in spec ies other than the guinea-pig, but the presence of cells in lympho-reticular tissues having a similar function is indicated by the extraction of chemi cally and spectrally similar proteoglycans from the spleens of sheep, pigs, rats and humans [6]. We have shown in the present study that, like KPG.…”

“…It possesses a characteristic intracytoplasmic inclusion body [19] which contains a proteoglycan [5], Kurloff cell proteoglycan (KPG) has been extracted from the guinea-pig spleen and purified by D ean and M uir [5] who showed that, although chemically similar to chondroitin 4-sulphate, KPG has an infrared spec trum showing prominent bands absorbing at 805 and 1,260 cm '1 [5,6] in addition to those bands at 720, 850 and 928 cm '1 characteristic of chondroitin 4-sulphate [10]. KPG also shows strong ultraviolet absorp tion with maxima at 257 nm in acid medium and at 265 nm in alkaline medium [6], Proteoglycans possessing chemical and spectral characteris-1 MRC Clinical Research Fellow. …”

“…The Kurloff-cell proteoglycan and the corresponding glycosaminoglycan inhibited the migration of macrophages from capillary tubes in vitro at extremelylowconcentrations without effecting transformation of lymphocytes (Revell et al, 1972), whereas proteoglycans and glycosaminoglycans isolated from pig tracheal cartilage by the same procedure had no such effect. Moreover, proteoglycans purified from sheep, pig, rat and human spleens, removed during or immediately after pregnancy, all inhibited macrophage migration and had u.v.-and i.r.-absorption spectra which resembled the spectra of the guinea-pig material (Dean et al, 1971;Revell et al, 1972).…”
