The domains of complex event processing (CEP) and business process management (BPM) have different origins but for many aspects draw on similar concepts. While specific combinations of BPM and CEP have attracted research attention, resulting in solutions to specific problems, we attempt to take a broad view at the opportunities and challenges involved. We first illustrate these by a detailed example from the logistics domain. We then propose a mapping of this area into four quadrants -two quadrants drawing from CEP to create or extend process models and two quadrants starting $ This paper is an outcome of discussions and collaborations that were initiated at the Dagstuhl seminar 16341 on "Integrating Process-Oriented and Event-Based Systems" from a process model to address how it can guide CEP. Existing literature is reviewed and specific challenges and opportunities are indicated for each of these quadrants. Based on this mapping, we identify challenges and opportunities that recur across quadrants and can be considered as the core issues of this combination. We suggest that addressing these issues in a generic manner would form a sound basis for future applications and advance this area significantly.

Large scale, complex, networked enterprises, as may be considered (trans)national energy systems, multi-national manufacturing enterprises, smart cities a.s.o. are structures that can be characterized as systems of systems (SoS) and, as such, require specific modelling paradigms and control architectures to ensure their successful running. Their main characteristic is the necessity of solving practically one-of-a-kind problems with respect to the external context and internal configuration, thus dealing with dynamically evolving flows of data and information. The paper introduces the concept of intelligent cyber-enterprise, as an integrating paradigm that uses information and knowledge dynamics, in order to model and control SoS, especially focusing on the importance of appropriately adapt external and internal perception of an enterprise through a new generation of sensorial systems—the perceptive interfaces. The authors analyze sensing and perception in relation to intelligent cyber enterprise model and propose an implementation for a perceptive system interface.

New types of smart devices are emerging every day providing end-users with new ways of interacting with the IoT. Setup and configuration of these devices are, however, rather complex and require technical expertise. Especially in smart homes users often lack these skills and need assistance with setting up devices, which makes them hesitant to adopt new technologies. We present a mixed reality application to support users with the setup of IoT devices. The setup tasks are modelled and executed as formal interactive workflows. An intuitive wizard guides users and presents additional task-related multimedia information in mixed reality. A semantically enriched IoT middleware provides data and control of the IoT devices. We conducted a brief user study to evaluate the application's usability.
