Protocol for an extended scoping review on the use of virtual nominal group technique in research

Abstract: Introduction Consensus group methods such as the Nominal Group Technique (NGT) and Delphi method are commonly used in research to elicit and synthesize expert opinions when evidence is lacking. Traditionally, the NGT involves a face-to-face interaction. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many in-person meetings have moved to online settings. It is unclear to what extent the NGT has been undertaken in virtual settings. The overarching aim of this scoping review is to explore the use of the virtual NGT in re… Show more

“…In accordance with Humphrey-Murto et al (2023), the virtual nominal group technique (vNGT) is an adaptation of the methodology that convenes geographically dispersed participants online through video conferencing and collaborative editing platforms, with “many researchers having pivoted to online modalities since the 2019 COVID19 pandemic” (p. 6). Moreover, the range of digital tools available to facilitate its implementation offer notable affordances, such as the rapid sharing and structuring of ideas (Khurshid et al , 2023).…”

“…28 Moreover, while the nominal group has traditionally been conducted in person, increased virtual conferencing options and pandemic restrictions have prompted some to convert to virtual models. 30 In all of these considerations there is no "correct" answer, but researchers must clearly defend their choices in light of the study purpose, so the reader can consider the appropriateness and implications on the results. While Delphi reporting guidelines have been published, 21,31 an updated set of guidelines are currently being developed.…”

“…Participants may see feedback from peers only (e.g., physicians), from multiple stakeholders separately (e.g., physicians and patients), or from multiple stakeholders combined which may or may not impact outcomes 28 . Moreover, while the nominal group has traditionally been conducted in person, increased virtual conferencing options and pandemic restrictions have prompted some to convert to virtual models 30 …”
