Proton-Deuteron Scattering and Test of Time-Reversal Invariance

Abstract: Abstract. The integrated proton-deuteron scattering cross section σ for transversely polarized protons (P p y ) and tensor polarized deuterons (P xz ) constitutes a null test signal for time-reversal invariance violating but P-parity conserving effects. This cross section will be measured at COSY. Using the generalized optical theorem and Glauber theory we study the null-test observable σ for different types of T-odd P-even NN-interactions.The formalism includes full spin dependence of elementary pN-amplitudes… Show more

“…As already mentioned, the g ′ -term does not contribute to the null-test observable σ within the Glauber theory of pd elastic scattering [14,20]. Considering the h-and g-terms for the double-scattering mechanism and taking into account both the S-and D-wave of the deuteron we find the following result for the forward TVPC amplitude:…”

“…It provides a null-test signal for TVPC effects [4] and it will be measured in pd scattering at 135 MeV [3]. Theoretical studies of the energy dependence of the expected signal were performed at energies of the planned experiment [5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12] on the basis of the spin-dependent Glauber theory and demonstrate several unexpected effects. Among them are (i) the absense of the contribution from the lowest-mass meson-exchange (ρ meson) in the TVPC NN interaction, caused by its specific isospin, spin and momentum dependence; (ii) a strong impact of the deuteron D-wave on the null-test signal due to a destructive interference between the S -and D-wave contributions, even for zero transferred 3momentum; (iii) oscillating behaviour of the null-test signal as a function of the beam energy, i.e.…”
