“…Generally, while the time development of soft X-rays closely follows the Ha flare variations, the duration of harder X-ray bursts becomes progressively shorter and peaks earlier, before the Ha maximum, as the X-ray energy increases (see, e.g. Svestka and Simon, 1969). Good correlation is found between these bursts and first maxima of microwave radio bursts, while X-ray and radio bursts late in the flare development do not correlate, and the correlation with type III bursts is much lower as if not all X-ray bursts affect the upper corona (Arnoldy et al, 1967;Hudson et al, 1969a).…”

The reader is kindly asked to consider this report for some sort of greatly unbalanced equilibrium between the pressure exercised by the steadily increasing flow of papers discussing the vastly extending subject of solar activity, and the equally steady pressure exercised by the editor who insists on having this report twice as short as three years ago. Therefore, some selection of the subjects and papers had to be made, a fairly severe one, since only about one third of all published papers could have been mentioned in the references, and I am well aware that almost everyone who will read the report, could suggest some improvement of the selection scheme. Nevertheless, I believe that the report as it stands, can fulfill its basic purpose, i.e. to give to the readers a general picture on the progress, which has been achieved in the field of solar activity research since the Prague meeting and on some of the research activities which are in progress at the present time.It is a great pleasure to acknowledge the enormous help I have received from the authors of the individual sections of the Draft Report, as well as from many other members of the Commission, who have very kindly provided me, or the co-authors, with useful information on the recent progress of their work. It is necessary to add that some highly valuable comments made by V. Bumba, J. T. Jefferies, C. Sawyer, E. v. P. Smith, B. Valníček and J. M. Wilcox, have also been included in other chapters than those prepared by themselves.

Solar energetic particle warnings from a coronagraph

We report here the concept of using near‐real time observations from a coronagraph to provide early warning of a fast coronal mass ejection (CME) and the possible onset of a solar energetic particle (SEP) event. The 1 January 2016, fast CME, and its associated SEP event are cited as an example. The CME was detected by the ground‐based K‐Cor coronagraph at Mauna Loa Solar Observatory and by the SOHO Large Angle and Spectrometric Coronagraph. The near‐real‐time availability of the high‐cadence K‐Cor observations in the low corona leads to an obvious question: “Why has no one attempted to use a coronagraph as an early warning device for SEP events?” The answer is that the low image cadence and the long latency of existing spaceborne coronagraphs make them valid for archival studies but typically unsuitable for near‐real‐time forecasting. The January 2016 event provided favorable CME viewing geometry and demonstrated that the primary component of a prototype ground‐based system for SEP warnings is available several hours on most days. We discuss how a conceptual CME‐based warning system relates to other techniques, including an estimate of the relative SEP warning times, and how such a system might be realized.
