Providing Context-awareness in the Smart Car Environment

Abstract: Driving is a complex process influenced by a wide range of factors, especially complex interactions between the driver, the vehicle and the environment. This paper aims at the representation of complex situations in smart car domain and the middleware support. A general architecture of the smart car is presented from the point of view of context-awareness. A hierarchical context model is proposed for description of the complex driving environment. A software platform is built to provide the running environment… Show more

“…In [6], a middleware-based architecture enabling contextawareness in highly equipped vehicles, so-called smart cars, is presented. It also includes a three-layered context recognition architecture but is designed for static configurations and focuses on fine-granular context information.…”

“…On the other hand, study [9] proposed WSN-based traffic monitoring sensors to be deployed along the road to improve quality and safety of car mobility to enhance reliability and accuracy of short-term traffic state prediction. The study in [10] presented a context-aware smart car built by a hierarchical architecture to collect and evaluate contextual information about the driver, the vehicle and the driving environment. A software platform was then built for the context model and its applications.…”

“…Ontologies have proven to be powerful tools to specify and structure knowledge, to model behaviours schematically, or to provide formal specification of different entities in a system and their relationships. Other researchers [2,8,9] have used ontologies to represent contextual information. For instance, in [9], the authors tackle the problem of adding contextual information in the smart car domain.…”
