As the number and variety of connected devices increase, most end-users find themselves unable to manage their home networks properly, not having enough time and/or knowledge to do so. In this paper, we propose a new approach to remove this burden from them, by fully virtualizing the home network and delegating its management and operations to the ISP, while keeping end-users in control. We furthermore define the architecture of our software-based Majord'Home solution. Acting as a majordomo of the home, it handles a representation of the home objects and network constraints, automates the connectivity between heterogeneous elements and thus meets the needs of end-users. We finally describe the first version of our on-going implementation as a proof of concept.

Advances in ubiquitous computing and embedded systems are closing the gap between the physical and virtual worlds. With the Internet becoming the platform of choice for communication, ubiquitous computing faces new opportunities and challenges. Today, things like refrigerators and bathroom scales are becoming Internet enabled and the trend is increasing with Internet penetration predicted to cover a wide range of physical appliances. The Internet of Things (IoT) is an active research area, focusing on connecting real-world things over TCP/IP. This trend has recently triggered the research community to ponder the use of the Web (HTTP) as an application platform for integrating things on the Internet. The Web is now evolving from an information portal to an application platform for connecting people and things together. Harnessing physical things into the virtual world using Web standards also enriches the arena of conventional Web services to unleash data and function of physical things to be participants on the information highway. In this chapter, we introduce the Web of Things (WoT) as an application platform for the world of heterogeneous things around us. We reveal the state of the art in research and discuss the models and technologies driving the WoT to support future ambient environments where people and things interact seamlessly.

With the Internet of Things (IoT), we are facing a proliferation of connected devices distributed over a collection of geographical locations and offering new services to users referred to as IoT services. These services are highly heterogeneous and their number is growing fast. To facilitate IoT service search, some solutions rely on the use of Semantic Web technologies to create homogenous service descriptions to reason on and support accurate and flexible search. However, most existing approaches are centralized and fail to scale with respect to the number of advertised services. To address this scalability issue, we present in this paper a distributed, semantic-based IoT service search system. It relies on a hierarchical network of semantic gateways that represent geographical locations and host semantic service descriptions. To answer a service query, our approach is based on request matching and forwarding though the use of routing tables and similarity thresholds. Based on defined metrics, recursive clustering and information aggregation are performed over the hierarchy of gateways to construct the routing tables. We prove theoretically that our method ensures an accurate search of all matching services within the system. Experimental results show that our method enables to reduce greatly search cost with comparison to a centralized approach and has an acceptable search path length.
