Proximate and Amino Acid Composition of Celosia argentea Leaves

Abstract: ABSTRACT:The proximate, trace metals and amino acids composition of Celosia argentea were determined. The crude fat, fibre and protein contents were moderate with 1.10, 3.53 and 5.17% respectively while high in the ash content (22.43%). Results of the amino acid analysis revealed high contents of the essential amino acids with methionine as the limiting amino acid. Comparing its essential amino acids with the WHO recommended values, the vegetable is adequate in these acids.

“…From this study, it can be deduced that the amino acid composition is affected by both taro leaf varieties and processing methods, there is limited research results on processed taro leaf amino acid composition and the findings of this study was reviewed with other amino acid composition of yam, cassava and Moringa leaves. As noted by different researchers (Sheela et al, 2004;Ayodele and Olajide, 2011;Busani et al, 2011), the amino acid profile of the present study was potentially enough than yam and cassava leaf. For the present study, the amino acid profiles, suggesting that high values were obtained from taro leaf curd concentrate and had adequate sulphur containing amino acid.…”

“…Due to its adaptability, it is widely used as an ornamental plant and for medicinal purposes, in addition to having high economic value for some regions (Akinfasoye et al, 2008;Singh et al, 2020). This plant has a high content of proteins and vitamins and is a good source of calcium, iron, carbohydrates and phosphorus (Ayodele & Olajide, 2011), however, despite its nutritional popularity in tropical regions, C. argentea is also considered an invasive plant (Council, 2006). Thus, it is distributed irregularly in the areas of agricultural crops, being considered one of the main obstacles in production, since it contributes to the reduction of productivity and loss of product quality, as they compete for sunlight, water, nutrients and space with the cultures (Sausen et al, 2020).…”
