Proximate Composition and Heavy Metal Analysis of Three Aquatic Foods in Makoko River, Lagos, Nigeria

Abstract: ree aquatic products, tilapia sh, lobster and crab, were collected from the landing site of shermen in Makoko, a shing suburb in Lagos State, Nigeria. ey were analyzed for their proximate composition, and concentration of heavy metals (Cr, Cd, and Pb) was also measured in them. e nutrient values varied among the three organisms. e lobsters and crabs had higher protein values while tilapia was richer in lipid and moisture content. In most cases, these di erences were not signi cant. e concentration of heavy met… Show more

“…Abdel-Kader and Mourad (2020) showed that the water content in T. zillii 64± 1.9% and C. gariepinus 64 ± 2.1% from Burullus Lake, Egypt much lower than water content in our study. Ayanda et al (2018) recorded a signi cant rise in water content in tilapia from Nigeria at Makoko River may be rendering the sh sensitive to microbial spoilage, damage to fatty acids, and consequently decreasing sh quality thereby reducing its survival time (Omolara and Omotayo 2009) In our results, sh species showed an insigni cant decrease in the ash content. Maximum ash content was observed in the T. zillii (7.33±1.00%) while the minimum value (6.66±0.85 %) was recorded in the C. gariepinus.…”

“…Decapods are omnivorous and act as scavengers, they eat both plant and animal materials. They are found in brackish and fresh waters in Nigeria, they are of great importance to human health due to their richness in essential lipids, proteins, and other nutrients such as minerals, vitamins and omega-3 fatty acid, a daily nutrient requirement recommended by the American Heart Association which helps in brain development and gives protection against stroke and heart diseases [6,7,8].…”
