This is a severe external otitis which proceeds towards an infiltrating osteomyelitis of the skull base and may be lethal when untreated (Meltzer and Keleman, 1959;Chandler, 1968Chandler, , 1977Morgenstein and Seung, 1971;Wilson et al, 1971;Petrozzi, 1974;Nadol, 1980;Babiatzki and Sade, 1987). Today the survival rate is excellent when the basic underlying disease, such as diabetes mellitus, is adequately treated and when appropriate and prolonged antipseudomonal therapy is employed.…”
