Pseudomonas putida Strain FStm2 Isolated from Shark Skin: A Potential Source of Bacteriocin

Abstract: Bacteriocin-producing Pseudomonas putida strain FStm2 isolated from shark showed broad range of antibacterial activity against all pathogens tested except Bacillus subtilis ATCC11774, MRSA N32064, Proteus mirabilis ATCC12453, Enterococcus faecalis ATCC14506, Salmonella typhimurium ATCC51312, Salmonella mutan ATCC25175, and Aeromonas hydrophila Wbf314. Of the three growth media tested in this study, TSB was observed to support the bacteriocin activity the most. While the highest bacteriocin activity was observe… Show more

“…isolated from shark. These include Lactobacilus pentosus isolated from grey carpet shark Chiloscyllium punctatum (Jiang et al, 2017); a non-LAB bacteria of Halomonadaceae family isolated from a dead shark (Zhen-Xing et al, 2016); Bacillus isolated from deep sea shark (Bindiya et al, 2015); and Pseudomonas putida isolated from shark skin (Ahmad et al, 2013). The objectives of our study was to isolate and study the potential LAB strains from the intestine of a Black tip shark Carcharhinus limbatus, originated from Malaysian East Coast coastal water.…”

“…Moreover, the inhibitory activity decreased by 90% when treated with a protease, suggesting the presence of protein compounds in the crude extract. These characteristics are commonly related to some bacteriocins produced by Pseudomonas strains [56]. Additional studies are required to confirm the chemical nature of the inhibitory substances isolated in this work.…”

“…The stability of the bacteriocin was maintained within a range of 30-70 C and pH 3-9, but the activity was greatly affected by the culture conditions of the strain. 145 In addition to possessing antimicrobial properties, bacteriocins may also play a role in immune regulation. Bacteriocins can act as signalling peptides, regulating the host immune system by signalling through quorum sensing or signalling cells of the host immune system.…”
