“…Strasser et al (2000) introduced the performance index (PI abs ) as the product of three independent parameters combining structural and functional criteria: density of reaction centers, the quantum efficiency of primary photochemistry and conversion of excitation energy in electron transport. This parameter was found to be much more sensitive to environmental effects than commonly used parameter F v /F m (Brestič and Živčák 2013) and it was shown to be well correlated with photosynthetic capacity measured as CO 2 assimilation (van Heerden et al 2003, Ripley et al 2004. Later, the total performance index (PI tot ) was introduced (Smit et al 2009).…”

“…Several authors observed the decrease in PI values with the advancing drought in different crops (Strasser et al 2000;Živčák et al 2008). In adult trees this reaction is probably the manifestation of acute stress and primary photochemical processes are more sensitive to high temperatures than to drought (Brestič & Živčák 2013). The gradual increase of the values during the growing season is the result of the annual dynamics of pigment content, and hence, it is the natural change in the efficiency of photochemical processes.…”

“…Additionally, specific automated imaging systems can analyze chlorophyll fluorescence emitted by the green parts of plants (Chen et al, 2014). Unlike to majority of imaging methods, the parameters of chlorophyll fluorescence are directly associated with physiological processes, mostly with photosynthesis (Kalaji et al, 2016) with broad possibilities to detect effects of stress factors (Brestic and Zivcak, 2013;Zivcak et al, 2014;Brestic et al, 2015, in press). Using the special technical application of chlorophyll fluorescence may detect also some qualitative traits associated with content of biologically active phenolic compounds (Sytar et al, , 2016.…”
