Aims: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a demyelinating neurodegenerative inflammatory autoimmune disease. Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is characterized as a strong urge to move the legs to stop abnormal sensations there. In this study, we aimed to investigate whether or not the increased RLS frequency seen in MS could be associated with depression and fatigue. Methods: The study involved 98 patients with definite MS and 129 healthy volunteers. The Beck Depression Inventory and Fatigue Severity Scale were used to assess all participants. The patients and the healthy volunteers were examined for RLS according to the criteria of the International Restless Legs Syndrome Study Group. Results: When the factors related to RLS in MS were evaluated, there were significant relationships found among age, type of MS, pyramidal symptoms, intestinal and bladder symptoms, number of lesions in MR, depression, and fatigue. Risk factors for RLS were also seen more frequently in the MS group than in the healthy volunteers. Conclusion: RLS was seen 2.55 times more frequently in patients with MS than in the control group. This was due to the existence of numerous factors rather than a single factor – including depression and fatigue.

AbstractMultiple sclerosis (MS) is one of the most disabling neurodegenerative disorders. Depression is the most frequent psychiatric disorder accompanying MS. Although much attention is given to correlations between depression and MS clinical factors, analysis of correlations between depression and life activities (social, household, professional activities and family life) and the well-being of MS patients’ is insufficient. However, improvement of these functions could positively influence the outcomes of MS treatment. The aim of this study was to evaluate relationships between depression, life activities of MS patients, and their proposals how to improve the well-being. Materials and methods. The study lasted three years with 270 adult MS patients involved in it. ICD-10 criteria were used to diagnose depression. Original questionnaire was used to measure life activities and the well-being of the patients. Results. Prevalence of depression was 20.7% with no difference regarding the gender. Almost 84% of depressed respondents indicated, that MS disturbs their family life, 71.4% recommended to assign more attention to MS in general and 64.3% — to include more medications into reimbursement list. Conclusions. MS patients diagnosed with depression significantly more often than non-depressed indicate that MS disturbs their family life; recommend to assign more attention to MS in general and to include more medications into reimbursement list.

ÖzBu araştırmada, MS hastalarında yaşanan belirsizlik duygusunun intihar düşüncesine etkisini belirlemek amaçlanmıştır. Araştırma, Samsun Ondokuz Mayıs Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Nöroloji Polikliniği'nde 01 Mart 2012-11 Eylül 2012 tarihleri arasında gerçekleştirilmiştir. Araştırmanın evrenini, Samsun Ondokuz Mayıs Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Hastanesi Nöroloji Polikliniği'nde kayıtlı olan 560 MS hastası oluşturmuştur. Win Episcope 2,0 programıyla örneklem büyüklüğü minimum 125 olarak belirlenmiş, belirtilen tarihler arasında nöroloji polikliniğine ayaktan tedavi için başvuran ve araştırmaya dahil edilme kriterlerine uyan tüm Multiple Skleroz hastaları (209 kişi) çalışmaya alınmıştır. Örneklem seçme yöntemine gidilmemiştir. Ancak hastaların 17'sinin okuma yazması olmaması, 7'sinin çalışmaya katılmayı kabul etmemesi, 5'inin 65 yaş üzeri olması, 3'ünün depresyon ve 2'sinin diğer bir psikiyatrik bozukluk öyküsü olması nedeniyle araştırma kapsamına alınamamıştır ve araştırma 175 Multiple Skleroz hastası ile tamamlanmıştır. Veri toplamada, sosyodemografik bilgi fomu, belirsizliğe tahammülsüzlük ölçeği, intihar düşüncesi ölçeği ve nöroloji kayıtlarından hastaların EDSS puanları kullanılmıştır. Veri toplama aracının kapsam geçerliliği için uzman görüşü alınmıştır. Verilerin istatistiksel analizi, bilgisayar ortamında SPSS16,0 paket programı kullanılarak yapılmıştır. Verilerin istatistiksel değerlendirilmesinde; tanımlayıcı istatistikler, korelasyon analizi, Kruskal-Wallis ve Mann Whitney U testi kullanılmıştır. Araştırmaya dahil edilen hastaların yaş ortalaması 35,82±9,83 olup, %67,4'ünün kadın olduğu ve %70,3'ünün evli olduğu, %52,6'sının yaşadığı yerin il olduğu, %56,6'sının çalışmadığı, %10,9'unun emekli olduğu, %79,4'ünün orta gelirde olduğu ve %76,6'sının RR MS klinik tipte olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Araştırma kapsamına alınan hastaların belirsizliğe tahammülsüzlüğünün intihar düşüncesini etkilediği (p<0,05) bulunmuştur.Araştırmanın sonuçları doğrultusunda MS hastalarına belirsizliği ve intihar düşüncesini azaltmak amacıyla sağlık eğitimleri ve danışmanlık hizmetlerini kullanarak multidisipliner çalışmalar yürütmeleri önerilmektedir.Anahtar Kelimeler: Multiple Skleroz, Belirsizlik, İntihar Düşüncesi. AbstractThis descriptive study aimed to determine the effect of intolerance of uncertainty in multiple sclerosis patients on suicidal ideation. The study was conducted at Samsun Ondokuz Mayıs University, Medical Faculty Neurology Outpatient Department between 01 March 2011 and 11 September 2012. Target population of the study consisted of 560 MS patients from Samsun, Ondokuz Mayıs University, Medical Faculty Neurology Outpatient Department. Minimum sample size was determined as 125 via Episcope Win 2.0 program and all Multiple Sclerosis patients (N=209) who were admitted to the neurology outpatient department between the dates specified and met inclusion criteria participated in the study.
