Psychological maltreatment: Progress achieved

Abstract: The devotion of a central article in this special issue and of responses by a variety of researchers indicates that serious scholarly attention is finally being focused on psychological maltreatment. This is a topic of genuine significance to child development and psychopathology research. McGee and Wolfe's (1991) article raises important issues and applies a theoretical focus that are useful in highlighting important aspects of psychological maltreatment.

“…This is contrary to reports in which emotional abuse was present in most cases of physical abuse and neglect (Claussen & Crittenden, 1991;Crittenden, Claussen, & Sugarman, 1994). Hart and Brassard (1991) noted that populations in which pure forms of psychological maltreatment exist appear more likely to be found outside of the populations processed by the usual child protection jurisdictions. While child physical abuse and neglect do occur in the Army community, it is generally believed by Army Family Advocacy Program personnel that much of the substantiated physical abuse and neglect does not usually reach the level of severity of cases seen in communities served by civilian child protective services.…”

“…Hart and Brassard (1991) believed that the parental behavior should not be called maltreatment unless such behavior has been established to produce a negative impact on child development. This statement then includes consideration of the threat of harm as well as extant harm to a particular child.…”

“…Selon certains chercheurs, l'impact et les conséquences de la maltraitance psychologique seraient principalement fonction de l'évaluation subjective que fait l'enfant des mauvais traitements subis (Hart et Brassard, 1991;Rohner, Khaleque et Cournoyer, 2005b). Autrement dit, quand l'enfant perçoit le rejet de sa personne dans un geste ou une omission parentale (p.ex., la fessée), cet événement aurait un effet néfaste sur son développement.…”

“…Now that a multitude of harmful developmental outcomes have been linked to emotional abuse, researchers are questioning why, for whom, and how emotional abuse exerts its detrimental impacts and are searching for mediating and moderating factors that may explain the variability in outcomes associated with emotional abuse (Brassard & Donovan, 2006;Hart & Brassard, 1991;Wright, 2007). Most of this research is with adults and has found that depressive symptoms, self-criticism, fear of criticism/rejection, low self-esteem, and an insecure attachment style mediate the association between childhood emotional abuse and adult psychological symptoms (Brodhagen & Wise, 2008;Finzi-Dottan & Karu, 2006;Gerke, Mazzeo, & Kliewer, 2006;Hankin, 2005;Maciejewski & Mazure, 2006).…”
