Psychomotor Vigilance and Visual Field Test Performance

Abstract: While VFT is the least favorable part of the work-up for glaucoma patients, their self-assessment about VFT performance did not correlate with current VF reliability indicators. Although reliability of the VFT was not strongly affected by slower reaction times when tested by the PVT, the effect of psychomotor reaction time on other aspects of test outcomes is unknown and warrants further investigation.

“…In response to our aging population, this is particularly pertinent for older patients, given that advanced age, comorbidities, and disability can cause increased difficulties with navigating a digital interface, maintaining the correct posture, or staying focused. 15,30 However, our findings showed no age-related discrepancies in levels of discomfort or concentration, and > 50% of our participants were over the age of 65 years. This is a promising indicator that our application can be successfully delivered to older populations, improving their access to care.…”

“…Although integral to care, perimetry testing is commonly viewed by patients as the most stressful and difficult component of the consultation. 14,30 Patient anxiety can adversely affect both test performance and engagement. 15,16 Our data indicate that improvements to the user interface, test feedback, and patient comfort might contribute to a less stressful experience.…”

“…38 Alongside the issue of attention, reaction time is also related to in-test vigilance. 39 In the context of SITA-Faster, the impact of prolongation of reaction time requires further investigation in its effect upon reliability.…”

“…Obtaining a shorter test may improve patients’ experience during the test, since it is considered the hardest part of the examination by most glaucoma patients. 17 18 19 Given the fact that VFT requires a patient's attention because the subject has to actively respond to appearing stimuli by pressing a button, more motivated patients could lead to better reliability rates. Furthermore, shorter test times can help increase the number of patients tested per day, reducing the backlog in health-care systems.…”
