Psychopathie Disorder — A Useful Clinical Concept?

Abstract: The study reported upon here set out to investigate the degree to which the clinical concept of psychopathic disorder was shared between psychiatrists, psychologists and probation officers. Despite the small sample of respondents, it seems not unreasonable to conclude from the results reported below that the diagnosis of psychopathic disorder is still considered to be a useful one.

“…The use of comorbid ADHD as a subtyping criterion has the empirically validated advantages of concentrating behavioral and biological risks for psychopathy, and it has better content validity for emergent psychopathy than does CD or ADHD alone. Most clinicians and researchers agree that psychopathy is associated with a constellation of affective, interpersonal, and behavioral characteristics, central to which are a profound lack of remorse or guilt and a callous disregard for the feelings, rights, and welfare of others Tennent, Tennent, Prins, & Bedford, 1990). This approach is also beginning to accumulate construct validity in empirical studies (Frick, this volume;Frick et aI., 1994).…”

“…Rather, they focus on unstable interpersonal relationships, disregard for the consequences of one's behaviour, a failure to learn from experience, egocentricity and a disregard for the feelings of others (Livesley et al 1987;Tennant et al 1990). Clearly, therefore, there is more to ASPD than criminal behaviour; the components of the underlying personality construct will be discussed later.…”
