Public Domain Computer-Aided Surgery (CAS) in Orthodontic and Maxillofacial Surgery

Abstract: The use of 3D simulation programs allows a better understanding of the pathological anatomy in all dimensions, and in many cases enables limitations to be recognized in advance. The public domain program makes a major contribution to the quality of orthognathic and craniofacial surgical planning through cost-free usability, and supports continuous development and exchange of experience.

“…Nondestructive, in vitro and in vivo (CT) application, a nominal resolution of 19.6 m, improved imaging capabilities, and all the expertise gained in the past CT research are characteristics that give CT its current gold standard status in endodontic research (16). Yet, this gold standard is subject to drawbacks, as experienced herein, including one repeatedly emphasized by various authors (17)(18)(19): its limited availability to the general research community, i.e. scientific use of this technology is confined to a few centers (16,17).…”

“…To prepare the midfacial distraction, 23 an orthodontic pre-treatment for the formation of the dental arches is required. 24 Since this often takes a long time -due to ankylosis of the teeth -it is recommended to perform a corticotomy of the individual teeth as described by [25][26][27] (Fig. 12).…”

“…To solve this problem, the orthognathic surgery has been used widely. The success of orthognathic surgery depends on exact planning based on precise diagnosis and clinical examination, acquisition and analysis of images determines the surgical process (1). Lateral and posteroanterior cephalometric radiographs, clinical photographs, anthropometric measurements, and plaster dental models are traditional surgical planning methods (2).…”
