Congested road and air networks, coupled with the idea that transport systems should be balanced, have spawned the field of intercity intermodal passenger transport which is based on travel across connected networks that is as seamless as possible. There is a very large number of attributes that affect the objective and subjective quality of travel. Intercity public transport planning therefore requires an excellent understanding of connections between different services and how the quality of these connections affects passengers, operators and the society at large. This article reviews the vast literature over the last 20 years from Europe, North America and Asia that is related to intercity travel, the connectivity of transport and cooperation between different modes of transport and presents a simple yet powerful way to perceive connected transport systems. The article then reviews planning practice at a variety of states worldwide, and suggests a set of focus areas of research or gaps that once filled, the authors expect, will allow further development of connected intercity passenger travel.

Traffic congestion, dominated by private mobility, reveals not only negative impacts on road safety and the environment, but also on community cohesion. With the global COVID-19/SARS-CoV-2COVID-19 (COVID-19) epidemic, there is an urgent need for social isolation and the use of individual private transport as per the approved health guidelines. Urban transport, especially public transportation (PT), is among the primary sectors affected due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Thus, novel alternatives for competitive PT services still have to be provided to remain meeting the socio-economic and ecological PT challenges. In this respect, sharing PT vehicles carrying passengers (shared freight-PT) could exploit a significant residual capacity as absorptive capacity is actually reduced. However, such use is based on a large-scale mutualization. The idea of integrating freight in passenger transit networks could be efficient within a Physical Internet (PI or π) framework for improving system monitoring, operational performance and, user comfort. This paper explores the major trends in the theory and practice of shared transport systems, in terms of passengers and freight, and suggests a PI conceptual framework to check if we could promote such logistics. In exploring the PI approach, a number of proposals appear providing answers and advance researches towards shared freight-PT.

Mobility and access to basic supply, education and working facilities is essential for participation in social, economic, professional and cultural activities. As new transport solutions contribute to an increase in inter-and multimodal mobility, the provision of seamless mobility options has an influence on the accessibility of everyday services for individuals, especially in rural regions. Thus, 'intermodal accessibility' to regional centres (i.e. locations where everyday goods and services are provided) comprises both providing people with basic services in space and the quality of the local transport infrastructure.This study presents the development of a GIS-based tool that facilitates an area-wide analysis of the population's intermodal accessibility to regional centres. Spatial indicators, which have a substantial influence on intermodal accessibility, are identified and weighted according to their impact. The set of indicators comprises factors reflecting the quality of the public transport service and station as well as comparative factors. Standardized data and interfaces such as GIP or VAO provide detailed spatial information on the multimodal transport infrastructure and support the transferability of the tool. Based on the resulting intermodal accessibility measure, regional disparities and areas with a poor transportation infrastructure can be identified.As the strategy developed here provides information on intermodal accessibility for the whole State of Salzburg in a transferable and transparent way, it contributes to integrative transport and settlement planning as well as to the assessment of specific locations.
