Publication guidelines and recommendations for pupillary measurement in psychophysiological studies

Abstract: A variety of psychological and physical phenomena elicit variations in the diameter of pupil of the eye. Changes in pupil size are mediated by the relative activation of the sphincter pupillae muscle (decrease pupil diameter) and the dilator pupillae muscle (increase pupil diameter), innervated by the parasympathetic and sympathetic branches, respectively, of the autonomic nervous system. The current guidelines are intended to inform and guide psychophysiological research involving pupil measurement by (1) sum… Show more

“…For instance, it has been found that task conflict quickly increases pupil dilation (Hershman & Henik, 2019). Interestingly, a similar effect on the pupil has been documented for arousing stimuli (for an overview, see Steinhauer et al, 2022), suggesting that emotional stimuli could modulate task conflict in particular. Here, more experimental work is needed to test these speculations.…”

“…As a result of a complex interplay of several nuclei within the brain (see e.g., Joshi & Gold, 2020), pupil dilation is controlled via sympathetic and parasympathetic inputs (Schumann et al, 2020). While pupil constriction is accomplished by parasympathetic innervation of the pupillae sphincter, pupil dilation is controlled by sympathetic innervation of the dilator pupillae muscle (Andreassi, 2000; Loewenfeld, 1999), but see Steinhauer et al (2022) for a thorough elaboration. Therefore, erotic cue exposure‐associated pupil dilation likely results from sympathetic effects.…”

“…In addition, numerous psychological phenomena (Ferencová et al, 2021; Steinhauer et al, 2022) can impact pupillometry measurements such as the anticipation of pain (Bitsios et al, 2004), emotional reactions (Henderson et al, 2014) or cognitive tasks (Hess & Polt, 1964). These phenomena are particularly difficult to control in the ED environment.…”
