Pull the Andon Rope on Working Memory Capacity Interventions Until We Know More

Abstract: Clinicians and practitioners should look to already established interventions for improving how students with developmental language disorders utilize organizational strategies and other well-researched methods for improving their cognitive and academic functioning in functional contexts.

“…An alternative is to intervene on the language system with downstream gains in VWM. Interventions focused on improving phonological abilities have been shown to benefit VWM capacity (Gillam et al, 2018), a finding consistent with the significant role of PA in our study. Research is needed to determine which intervention approaches result in well-maintained, functional language gains.…”

“…Intervention to remediate VWM limitations is an active area of research. The evidence supporting intervention in VWM is controversial as researchers debate whether immediate gains in VWM result in downstream gains in functional language ability (Gillam, Holbrook, Mecham, & Weller, 2018). An alternative is to intervene on the language system with downstream gains in VWM.…”

“…Funnel plot of observed outcomes (gs) and standard errors of very-near-transfer measures at follow-up. 6 Interestingly, the lack of follow-up far-transfer effects also seems to reject the hypothesis that some time is needed in order for generalized results reported in most recent meta-analyses and systematic reviews in the broader field of WM training (e.g., Dougherty, Hamovits, & Tidwell, 2016;Gillam, Holbrook, Mecham, & Weller, 2018;Melby-Lervåg et al, 2016;Sala & Gobet, 2017a, b;Soveri, Antfolk, Karlsson, Salo, & Laine, 2017). Conversely, our findings contradict the more optimistic conclusions of those meta-analyses and systematic reviews specifically examining the impact of CWMT on far-transfer measures (Nutley & Ralph, n.d.;Pearson, 2016;Shinaver et al, 2014;Spencer-Smith & Klingberg, 2015).…”

“…Another way to reduce negative environmental impacts is to avoid reprocessing raw material or subproducts due to operations poorly done (Abed et al, 2020 ). Also, notifications are not made to the operator through Andon, and production lines continue with defective products identified in the market or subsequent processes (Gillam et al, 2018 ). The maquiladora industry has a high level of human labor, where human errors in operations can generate much waste that can be avoided through Poka-yoke, visual management, or Andon.…”
