Pulsatile Luteinizing Hormone Patterns in the Follicular Phase of the Menstrual Cycle, Polycystic Ovarian Disease (PCOD) and Non-PCOD Secondary Amenorrhea

Abstract: To characterize the oscillations of plasma LH in normally cycling and amenorrheic women, three groups of women were studied: I, normal women during the follicular phase of the cycle (n = 9); II, women with polycystic ovarian disease (PCOD; n = 11); and III, women with non-PCOD secondary amenorrhea (n = 12). Blood samples were obtained at 10-min intervals for 6 h on 2 separate days. A pulse was defined as an increase in LH at least 20% over the preceding lowest value (nadir). Since LHRH release immediately foll… Show more

“…Menstruation stops occurring after menopause which usually occurs between 45 and 55 years of age. Amenorrhea refers to a condition which is characterized with lack of menstrual periods from three to sixmonths during a women's reproductive years (Burger et al, 1985;Soleymani et al, 2014).Short or tremendously small periods are termed as hypomenorrhea while those which last more than 7 days are called hypermenorrhea (Fraser et al, 2007). This cycle can be reformed/changed by using contraceptives ( oral or injectable) (Klump et al, 2013).…”

“…The reason for this difference is unclear. In patients with PCOS the LH pulse frequency and amplitude are relatively high (31,32,33,34). Potentially, the LH frequency and amplitude are 'normalized' after ovarian manipulation, thus restoring it to the normal (non-PCOS) situation.…”

“…Esta condição é caracteristicamente expressa por concentrações séricas elevadas de LH ou da relação LH/FSH tanto em condições basais quanto em resposta à administração de GnRH ou seus agonistas (12)(13)(14). O hiperestrogenismo, gerado pela conversão periférica dos androgênios secretados pelo ovário, contribui para esta situação, promovendo um aumento adicional na sensibilidade hipofisária ao GnRH (12,15).…”
