Data authentication is vital nowadays, as the development of the internet and its applications allow users to have all-time data availability, attracting attention towards security and privacy and leading to authenticating legitimate users. We have diversified means to gain access to our accounts, like passwords, biometrics, and smartcards, even by merging two or more techniques or various factors of authentication. This paper presents a systematic literature review of papers published from 2010 to 2022 and gives an overview of all the authentication techniques available in the market. Our study provides a comprehensive overview of all three authentication techniques with all the performance metrics (Accuracy, Equal Error Rate (EER), False Acceptance Rate (FAR)), security, privacy, memory requirements, and usability (Acceptability by user)) that will help one choose a perfect authentication technique for an application. In addition, the study also explores the performance of multimodal and multi-factor authentication and the application areas of authentication.

The paper presents a secure and usable variant of the Game Changer Password System, first proposed by McLennan, Manning, and Tuft. Unlike the initial proposal based on inadequately secure Monopoly and Chess, we propose an improved version based on a layered “Battleship” game resilient against brute force and dictionary attacks. Since the initially proposed scheme did not check for the memorability and usability of a layered version, we conducted an experiment on the usability and memorability aspects. Surprisingly, layered passwords are just as memorable as single ones and, with an 80% recall rate, comparable to other graphical password systems. The claim that memorability is the most vital aspect of game-based password systems cannot be disproved. However, the experiment revealed that the usability decreased to such a low level that users felt less inclined to use such a system daily or recommend it to others. Our study has once again shown that optimizing the password security–memorability–usability triangle is hard to achieve without compromising one of its cornerstones. However, the layered Game Changer Password System can be used in specific applications where usability is of secondary importance, while security and memorability augmented by its graphical interface are at the forefront.

System security is very important, especially in the age that we live in. One of the ways to secure data is by creating a password that makes it difficult for unauthorized user to gain access to the system. However, what makes it difficult for the system to be attacked is directly dependent on approach used to create it, and how secured it is. Text based approach is the oldest authentication approach. It requires that the user supplies textual password in order to gain access to the system. However, this approach has shown a significant drawback and several vulnerabilities, one of which is the difficulty in recalling or remembering textual passwords. Several other attacks that textual passwords are vulnerable to include brute force attacks, shoulder spying, dictionary attacks etc. The introduction of graphical schemes made things a lot better. Graphical passwords make use of images. However, most graphical schemes are vulnerable to shoulder surfing attacks. In this research work, we developed two systems; A position-based multi-layer graphical user authentication system and an Image-based multi-layer graphical user authentication system. The reason behind this research work is to compare the two systems, and evaluate them based on three major performance metrics: (1) Security, (2) Reliability (3) Individual preference.
