Purple Corn Silk Extract Attenuates UVB-Induced Inflammation in Human Keratinocyte Cells

Abstract: UVB is a causative factor for severe skin damage, such as cell aging, death, and inflammation. UVB easily permeates into the epidermis layer of human skin, which is mainly composed of keratinocyte cells. In previous results, we found that purple corn silk (PCS) extract showed the potential to inhibit keratinocyte damages of UVB-treated cells. Thus, in this study, we aimed to evaluate the preventive effects of PCS extract against the inflammation of UVB-induced keratinocyte cells using the HaCaT cell line. HaCa… Show more

“…Therefore, anthocyanins in mature purple corn have rich nutritional and disease prevention value (Kang et al, 2012;Petroni et al, 2014;Gaĺvez Ranilla, 2020;Lee et al, 2020). Such as protecting cells (Hong et al, 2013;Poorahong et al, 2021), preventing cancer (Shi et al, 2021;Bars-Cortina et al, 2022;de Arruda Nascimento et al, 2022;Mottaghipisheh et al, 2022), preventing cardiovascular diseases (Wongsa, 2020;Dong et al, 2022;Miladiyah and Nuryadi, 2022) and improving eyesight (Ghosh and Konishi, 2007;Tandon, 2022).…”

“…A topically applied purple corn extract was able to inhibit the aging process by reducing the matrix metalloproteinase 1 (MMP-1) levels and increasing the collagen in the skin of rats exposed to UV-B radiation [ 4 ]. Furthermore, the purple corn extract provided protection against the ultraviolet B induced cell damage [ 5 ] and inflammation by suppressing the NF-κB nuclear translocation and decreasing the proinflammatory mediators, such as iNOS, and the COX-2 levels in human keratinocyte (HaCaT) cells [ 6 ]. Finally, the purple waxy corn extracts were found to increase the collagen levels in normal human skin fibroblasts [ 3 ].…”
