Putative Meiotic Toolkit in the Dinoflagellate Prorocentrum cordatum: Additional Evidence for Sexual Process from Transcriptome

Abstract: Prorocentrum cordatum (Ostenfeld) Dodge-is a planktonic armored dinoflagellate that is a bloom-forming, potentially toxic cosmopolitan species. The transition from vegetative reproduction to the sexual process has been recently shown for this organism. Here, we present the results of transcriptomic data analysis that uncovered one syngamy-associated and 16 meiosis-associated proteins in P. cordatum. We also detected an amino acid sequence homologous to bacterial MutS2 protein. The MutS2 presence and origin in … Show more

“…2b ), of which, Mei2, was highly expressed (FPKM = 190.03). Mei2 is a regulatory RNA-binding protein which plays a vital role in the meiosis initiation [ 68 , 69 ] and was originally discovered in yeast, then in plants, and more recently in several algal species including Fugacium kawagutii [ 70 ], Scrippsiella trochoidea [ 71 ], Prorocentrum donghaiense [ 38 ], Heterosigma akashiwo [ 72 ], and Prorocentrum cordatum [ 73 ]. Other highly expressed meiosis genes found in the g Noctiluca bloom included mini chromosome maintenance proteins (MCM2-7), which plays an important role in DNA replication during pre-meiotic S phase [ 74 ].…”

“…antipodarum . To this end, we generated and curated a meiosis gene set using both the original ( Villeneuve and Hillers 2001 ; Schurko and Logsdon 2008 ) and more up-to-date ( Tvedte et al 2017 ; Berdieva et al 2021 ) inventories of conserved meiosis genes for all six species. These inventories discriminate between genes that specifically function in meiosis and genes that are pleiotropic with respect to function outside of meiosis.…”

“…A catalog of meiosis genes present in the genomes of sexually reproducing P. estuarinus and P. kaitunuparaoa provides the basis for studying the maintenance/decay of sex-specific genes in the multiple separately derived obligately asexual lineages that characterize P. antipodarum. To this end, we generated and curated a meiosis gene set using both the original (Schurko and Logsdon Jr 2008;Villeneuve and Hillers 2001) and the most up-to-date (Berdieva, et al 2021;Tvedte, et al 2017) inventory of conserved meiosis genes.
