Dams for water supply usually represent an untapped hydroelectric potential. It is a small energetic potential, in most situations, usually requiring a particular solution to be viable. The use of pumps as power turbines often represents an alternative that enables the power generation in hydraulic structures already in operation, as is the case of dams in water supply systems. This potential can be exploited in conjunction with the implementation of PV modules on the water surface, installed on floating structures, both operating in a hydro PV hybrid system. The floating structure can also contribute to reducing the evaporation of water and providing a small increase in hydroelectric power available. This paper presents a pre-feasibility study for implementation of a hydroelectric power plant and PV modules on floating structures in the reservoir formed by the dam of Val de Serra, in southern Brazil. The dam is operated to provide drinking water to about 60% of the population of the city of Santa Maria, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, in southern Brazil. The pre-feasibility study conducted with Homer software, version Legacy, indicated that the hydroelectric plant with a capacity of 227 kW can operate together with 60 kW of PV modules. This combination will result (in one of the configurations considered) in an initial cost of USD$ 1715.83 per kW installed and a cost of energy of USD$ 0.059/kWh.

The renewable energy systems (RESs) are an attractive option to electrify the community as they are environment friendly, free of cost, and all-pervading. The efficiency of these energy systems is very low and can be improved by integrating them in parallel. In this paper, hydro (7.5 kW) and solar systems (10 kW) are taken as RESs and connected with the utility grid. Due to the intermittent nature of both the hydro and photovoltaic energy sources, utility grid is connected to the system for ensuring the continuous power flow. The hydro power generation system uses the self excited induction generator (SEIG) and converters. The AC/DC/AC converter is used as interface to connect the hydro turbine to the utility grid to adjust the generated voltage to the utility grid voltage. The solar generation system is the combination of PV array, boost converter, and solar inverter. The control of both the hydro and solar power plants is provided through the constant current controller. The analysis has been done to verify the existence of the proposed system. Results demonstrate that the proposed system is able to be put into service and can feed the community.

The world will need greatly increased energy supply in coming years because of the rapidly increasing world population and depleting natural resources. For a long time, conventional energy sources have been utilized for power generation, but now it is of great concern that the rapid depletion of conventional sources added with their economic and environmental concerns are incompatible to address issues like growing electricity demand and environmental damages. Utilization of the alternative energy sources is compulsory to minimize the energy crisis around the world. Based on the alternative energy sources, a number of power generation systems have been designed to contribute for the management of optimized energy supply systems. The unpredictable nature of alternative energy sources is their common drawback, and they do not harness usable power for some considerable duration of time over the year. Therefore, trends are in progress to integrate two or more than two of these alternative energy systems to meet the required electricity supply in power generation operations. These systems are designated as hybrid systems and can be grid connected or off-grid depending upon their purpose and mode of fabrication. Off grid hybrid systems are popular for the electrification of the isolated and far-flung areas, where the grid supply is absent. This study mainly focuses on main 10 off grid, bi-source hybrid systems for power generation highlighting their role in energy stability. Systems' hybridization, power generation, energy flow schemes, operation schemes, and storage and backup needs have been addressed thoroughly in this study to provide a handy reference to stake holders for further work in this regime.
