PVP solid dispersions containing Poloxamer 407 or TPGS for the improvement of ursolic acid release

Abstract: Solid dispersions (SDs) of ursolic acid (UA) were developed using polyvinylpyrrolidone K30 (PVP K30) in combination with non-ionic surfactants, such as D-α-tocopherol polyethylene glycol 1000 succinate (TPGS) or poloxamer 407 (P407) with the aim of enhancing solubility and in vitro release of the UA. SDs were investigated using a 2 4 full factorial design, subsequently the selected formulations were characterized for water solubility, X-ray diffractometry (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), particl… Show more

“…1(a), diffraction peaks appeared at 15.02691, 19.04541, 23.14201, and 25.89251 in the XRD pattern of 407. 31,32 Also, the characteristic diffraction peaks of the new substance synthesized are located at 10.71581, 15.31, 19.16251, 23.37611 and 25.9121. These results can be explained as follows.…”

“…Contrastingly, SEM imagery showed the P-407 particles to be spherical with predominantly smooth surfaces, although some exhibit minor surface irregularities and are interspersed with smaller spheres ( Figure 10 B) [ 61 ]. The HPMC samples, however, significantly differed, displaying an assortment of irregular, non-crystalline structures.…”

“…However, a notable reduction in peak intensity was observed, particularly for the peaks associated with the drug molecule. P-407 exhibited sharp peaks indicative of a semi-crystalline structure, with the most intense peaks approximately at 19° and 23° (2θ) in addition to wider peaks 26.5° and 36° (2θ) (Figure 9B) [61,62]. The XRD pattern of STA showed an exceptionally intense peak at about 21.5° (2θ), with a less intense peak at 24.1° (2θ); these sharp peaks indicate a high degree of crystallinity in STA (Figure 9C) [63].…”
