Pyrolysis-Based Municipal Solid Waste Management in Poland—SWOT Analysis

Abstract: Poland’s management of municipal waste, which amounts to over 13 million tons/year, is not efficient—about 60% of the waste is subjected to recovery processes, about 20% of all municipal waste is converted into energy, and almost 40% is landfilled. The authors of this article recognize the potential of pyrolysis as a method of the thermal processing of waste allowing the potential of the energy contained in the waste to be utilized. Pyrolysis is an economically attractive alternative to incineration, with a si… Show more

“…However, this method can be improved with the use of small amounts of catalysts, allowing a reduction in the reaction temperature and time required to produce hydrocarbons with greater added value, such as fuel oils and petrochemical compounds. This has been stated by several authors including Wiggers et al [19], Eze et al [6], 6 Lawinska et al [11], Chiarello et al [21], and Douvartzides et al [5]. Pyrolysis promotes the breaking of the molecular structure of mainly C-C bonds, leading to products with good quality.…”

“…The basic idea based on SWOT is a multiangle comprehensive analysis. First, we set the initial value and threshold [ 17 ], and then calculate the optimal solution to improve the calculation accuracy of the optimal solution. The results are shown in Figure 5 .…”

“…Instead of landfilling and open dumping, nowadays, nations promote the recycling/reusing of wastes to curb environmental pollution [4,5]. As a result, scientists are continually making extreme efforts to use municipal, agricultural and forest industry waste in useful applications, which facilitates not only reducing environmental pollution but also lowering manufacturing costs [6][7][8][9]. One of the impending applications is polymer biocomposites, where incorporating agricultural or forest industry waste has proven to be quite beneficial from the techno-commercial and ecological point of view [10][11][12][13].…”
