Food waste (FW) is a severe environmental problem all over the world, and the recalcitrant organic residues (ROR) from FW treatment plant operations are also a critical environmental issue due to unsustainable treatment and disposal techniques.Requirements for FW and ROR complete exploitation with the establishment of recycling-renewable technologies are very crucial. This paper review AD and pyrolysis as two promising technologies to degrade FW and its residues, creating numerous renewable bioenergy yields with value-added. Existing oil/tar application methods in the AD suffered from various problems such as microorganism toxicity and limited productivity. Future upgrading techniques considering the second-stage pyrolysis process to decompose oil/tars for syngas with high hydrogen content and enhanced bio-methanation in the AD were addressed. Simultaneous pyrolysis by-product recycle in the AD during the valorization of FW are aimed to have the features of sustainability toward increased bioenergy production, reactor efficiency, and agricultural application. Hydrothermal treatment (HT) of food waste (FW) can form Maillard reaction products (MRPs), the biorefractory organic matter due to the occurrence of Maillard reaction. However, the integrating qualitative and quantitative approach to assess MRPs is scarce. The goal of this study was to develop a method to characterize and quantify MRPs created by HT of FW. MRPs were identified by molecular weight fractionation, indirect spectrometric indicators, and three-dimensional excitation-emission fluorescence (3DEEM) analysis. The 3DEEM method combined with fluorescence regional integration (FRI) and parallel factor (PARAFAC) analyses was able to differentiate clearly between MRPs and other dissolved organic compounds compared to other approaches. The volume of fluorescence Φ from FRI and maximum fluorescence intensity Fmax from PARAFAC were found to be suitable quantitative parameters for determination of MRPs in the hydrothermal FW system. These two parameters were validated with samples from hydrothermal FW under various operating temperatures and pH.

Abstract. Food waste generation is one of the most crucial problems of our constantly developing world. There are several common methods of its treatment, however each one has its own advantages and disadvantages. Pyrolysis attracting attention in this field since a long time, because it allows to utilize this valuable resource with energy and material recovery. Moreover, the environmental impact of the process is relatively low. In this paper, products of low temperature household waste pyrolysis underwent a detailed chemical analysis. Liquid and solid residues was examined. Composition and concentration of particular compounds and elements indicates presence of long chain alkane, alkene and carboxylic acid molecules together with small amounts of aromatics within the bio-oil samples. The presence of heavy metals in residues was detected, too. Since the products are usually described as non-toxic, the idea of waste' lowtemperature thermal treating in household was analyzed. In general, examined residues from the process are safe for the environment, thus pyrolysis can be considered as a legitimate mechanism to treat kitchen waste combined with energy recovery for homes.
