Pythagorean Fuzzy AHP Based Dynamic Subcontractor Management Framework

Yunus Başaran,
Hande Aladağ,
Zeynep Işık

Abstract: In construction projects, a significant part of construction work is done by subcontractors (SCs). Therefore, their management by main contractors (MCs) becomes an important issue as the density of SCs is created at the construction sites. In recent years, more focus on SC evaluation and selection in bidding process has been on the agenda whereas the subject of SC performance appraisal on-site during the project execution phase has been untended in the literature. Thus, this study aims to focus on the measurem… Show more

“…Among Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM), FAHP is ranked the second most used methodology, following AHP (Kubler et al, 2016). As a result, multiple studies are performed using AHP and FAHP extensions (Abusaeed et al, 2023;Başaran et al, 2023;Çolakoğlu & Şahiṅ, 2022;Demircan & Yetilmezsoy, 2023;Singh & Garg, 2017). They are widely used in different areas such as determination ERP priorities, prioritization of cost factors in agile software development (Abusaeed et al, 2023;Çolakoğlu & Şahiṅ, 2022).…”

“…The literature review suggests that because of the importance of selecting quality subcontractors, previous research was conducted to aid general contractors in their subcontractors' selection process. Several studies developed multiple-criteria decision-making MCDM models that also included a weighted score to help evaluate additional criteria other than using price alone [1,2,4].…”

“…They stated that their model reduced the risk involved in the selection phase and eliminated unqualified contractors during the bidding process. Mbachu [1] developed a conceptual framework for the assessment of construction subcontractors' eligibility and performance. He first investigated the criteria used to assess subcontractors' eligibility for bid invitation and award and then investigated the criteria used to assess the subcontractor's performance during the construction phase.…”

“…The Pythagorean fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (PFAHP) was developed with the aim of improving fuzzy AHP for obtaining more consistent results. The PFAHP is one of the favored methods evaluations in multi-criteria decision-making methods: (1) it considers vagueness and impreciseness of subjective evaluations, (2) experts can make clearer decisions over a wider area and express their assessment of the problem being addressed, and (3) the Pythagorean fuzzy set theory can handle not only incomplete information, but also vague information and inconsistent information commonly found in real situations [43,44]. The PFAHP method was employed in this study according to its advantages on giving opportunities to experts to express their thoughts by considering their thoughts' vagueness and impreciseness, which will result in obtaining more reliable and accurate data with less uncertainty, and the common use in the project management literature [41,[45][46][47][48].…”
