We show that the quadratic interaction of fundamental and second harmonics in a bulk dispersive medium, combined with self-defocusing cubic nonlinearity, give rise to completely localized spatiotemporal solitons (vortex tori) with vorticity s = 1. There is no threshold necessary for the existence of these solitons. They are found to be stable if their energy exceeds a certain critical value, so that the stability domain occupies about 10 % of the existence region of the solitons. On the contrary to spatial vortex solitons in the same model, the spatiotemporal ones with s = 2 are never stable. These results might open the way for experimental observation of spinning three-dimensional solitons in optical media.

Optical vortices are phase singularities nested in electromagnetic waves that constitute a fascinating source of phenomena in the physics of light and display deep similarities to their close relatives, quantized vortices in superfluids and Bose-Einstein condensates. We present a brief overview of the major advances in the study of optical vortices in different types of nonlinear media, with emphasis on the properties of vortex solitons. Self-focusing nonlinearity leads, in general, to the azimuthal instability of a vortex-carrying beam, but it can also support novel types of stable or meta-stable self-trapped beams carrying nonzero angular momentum, such as ring-like solitons, necklace beams, and soliton clusters. We describe vortex solitons created by multi-component beams, by parametrically coupled beams in quadratic nonlinear media, and in partially incoherent light, as well as discrete vortex solitons in periodic photonic lattices.

Abstract. We describe different types of self-trapped optical beams carrying phase dislocations, including vortex solitons and ring-like soliton clusters. We demonstrate numerically how to create such nonlinear singular beams by the interaction of several fundamental optical solitons. Mutual trapping of several solitons can be regarded as a synthesis of 'soliton molecules', and it corresponds to a transfer of an initial orbital angular momentum of a system of solitons to a spin momentum of an optical vortex.
