Abstract:The dysprosium indium compound DyIn 3 with the cubic AuCu 3-type structure shows an antiferromagnetic order at around T N = 20 K. We measured the elastic constants C 11 and C 44 in DyIn 3. The elastic softening toward T N and the Van-Vleck type behaviors below T N were observed. We analyzed the elastic properties by the crystal electric field theory corresponding the dipole-dipole interaction and the quadrupole-quadrupole interaction. The calculated results well represents the experimental behaviors.

scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
