Qualitative Analysis of the Phytochemical Contents of Different Anatomical Parts of Ripe Solanum aethiopicum Linneaus Fruits

Abstract: Aims: To determine qualitatively the amount of alkaloids, saponin, tannin, volatile oil, phenol and flavonoids in the different anatomical parts of ripe Solanum aethiopicum Linn fruits. Methodology: Solanum aethiopicum Linn fruits were purchased from Sabo market, Ogbomoso, Nigeria. The fruits were separated with a razor into four (4) anatomical parts (the epicarp, mesocarp, endocarp, and seed) after washing with distilled water. 1gram of each anatomical parts of the fruit were soaked in 20mls of distille… Show more

“…Medicinal properties of plants are a function of their phytoconstituents as plants rich in phytochemicals have been proven to exhibit varying pharmacological activities (Tunwagun et al, 2020). Therefore, evaluation of the phytochemicals present in a plant is critical in the development of plant-based drugs.…”

“…Saponin is present in moderate to high concentrations at all selected extracts (except aqueous) of F. thonningii leaf. The medicinal properties of plants are a function of their phytoconstituents as plants rich in phytochemicals have been proven to exhibit varying pharmacological activities (Tunwagun et al, 2020). In conclusion, F. thonningii methanol leaf extract has rich content of secondary metabolites when compared to its hexane and ethyl acetate extract.…”

“…Minerals and vitamins play a very important role in energy metabolism as well as function in lending Red Blood Cells (RBC) flexibility as they make their way through the arterial network (46). The mineral composition of the two samples studied as presented in table 1 (18,61,60,64,65). Report by Eze and Kanu, (60) posited high value of 14% saponin content of Solanum aethiopicum fruit as was observed in the quantitative analysis of the said fruit which was comparably high to the outcome of this study.…”
