Qualitative Cosmetic Evaluation After Root‐Coverage Procedures

Abstract: The present study demonstrated that non-submerged grafts are not recommended in cases of esthetic demand. Future root-coverage trials, basing their justification on esthetics, should include overall qualitative evaluation as the primary variable. The follow-up period should not be <12 months. The before-after panel scoring system is a tool that can be used to evaluate cosmetic outcomes.

“…Orsini et al 6 compared the results of CTG and no gingival augmentation in similar clinical scenarios by using the following parameters: dimensional changes of CTG (mm), color blending with the adjacent tissues (F = fair or E = excellent), and health status in the adjacent gingival margin and periodontal tissues (gingival index, plaque index, probing depths, and clinical attachment levels). 7 In Kerner et al, 8 an image-processing software was used to measure the amount of root coverage and soft tissue augmentation following root coverage procedures. There was no mention to the level of experience in periodontology of the examiners.…”

“…The three examiners involved in this study had an agreement level of 87.5%. 8 In Aichelmann-Reidy et al, 9 22 patients and an unspecified number of independent clinicians measured clinical root coverage, color match, contour, texture, blending of the graft with the adjacent tissue, scarring, and patient satisfaction of acellular allograft dermis (AD) or CTG at 3 and 6 months. Intraexaminer reliability was not assessed.…”

“…The reasons that dentists perform the treatment of gingival recession include esthetic issues as well as the reduction of hypersensitivity . According to previous reports, the esthetic issue (55–90.7%), which is becoming more stringent, has become the main purpose of root coverage procedures . If esthetic appearance is now the main concern of patients, an esthetic assessment of the surgical outcome is critical to a proper evaluation of root coverage.…”

“…A patient‐centered study that would allow the determination of the critical esthetic aspects is needed . Dentists also need to assess the esthetic aspects of results of root coverage that might be different between the patients' attitudes and the professional rating assessment, which typically excludes certain subjective variables …”
