Physochlainae Radix (PR) is an essential herbal medicine that has been generally applied for treating cough and asthma. In this study, a comprehensive strategy for quality evaluation of PR from different origins was established by integrating qualitative identification, quantitative analysis, and chemometric methods. A total of 58 chemical components were identified by ultra‐high‐performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole time‐of‐flight tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC‐Q‐TOF‐MS/MS), and a sensitive and rapid UHPLC‐QqQ‐MS/MS method was established for the simultaneous determination of 12 compounds. In addition, multivariate statistical analysis was applied for discriminant analysis to compare the differences among 30 batches of PR samples. The results showed that the 30 batches of PR collected from four provinces could be clustered into three categories, in which scoparone, protocatechuic acid, tropic acid, and scopolin were important components to distinguish the primary and non‐primary producing areas, as well as superior and inferior products of PR. Chemometric results were consistent and validated each other, and systematically explained the intrinsic quality characteristics of PR. This study first demonstrated that LC‐MS combined with multivariate statistical analysis, provided a comprehensive and effective means for quality evaluation of PR.

Introduction: Magnoliae officinalis cortex (MOC), a traditional Chinese medicine, has been used in treating gastrointestinal diseases since ancient time. According to the Chinese Pharmacopoeia, it includes two kinds of decoction pieces, raw and ginger juice processed Magnoliae officinalis cortex (RMOC and GMOC).Objective: The aim of this paper was to study the differences between non-volatile and volatile components in RMOC and GMOC. Methods:The non-volatile components were detected by HPLC fingerprinting coupled with content determination (syringin, magnoflorine, honokiol and magnolol).Meanwhile, their odor information was obtained using a Heracles NEO ultra-fast gas phase electronic nose to conduct radar fingerprint analysis, principal component analysis and discriminant factor analysis, and the volatile components were analyzed qualitatively by the Kovats retention index and the AroChemBase database.Results: The HPLC fingerprints were established and 20 common peaks were found in all chromatograms with similarity values of more than 0.900. The content determination results showed that the contents of syringin and magnoflorine decreased, while the contents of honokiol and magnolol increased in GMOC. By the gas phase electronic nose, the two decoction pieces could be distinguished obviously and 16 possible compounds were identified. Among them, the relative contents of (À)-α-pinene and β-pinene increased, while β-phellandrene and (+)-limonene levels decreased. Conclusion:The results suggested that honokiol, magnolol, (À)-α-pinene and β-pinene might be the main substances which could enhance the harmonizing effect on the stomach. Moreover, this paper could lay a foundation for exploring the processing mechanism of MOC and provide a novel method for the research of other traditional Chinese medicine with strong aroma.

The sensory quality of noodles is the key factor in determining consumers' acceptance, and the physicochemical properties can reflect the quality of noodles. In this study, the rheological and thermodynamic properties, noodle quality indexes, and molecular and structural parameters were characterized by adding different levels of buckwheat flour. Pearson correlation analysis was used to evaluate the correlation between physicochemical indexes and basic components of noodles. A comprehensive evaluation model was established by the combination of principal component analysis (PCA) and regression analysis (RA) to evaluate the sensory quality of noodles. The results showed that there was a significant correlation between the physicochemical indexes and the basic components. The two principal components extracted by PCA could explain 89.4% of the total variance of the data. RA showed that the comprehensive evaluation value of the principal component model had a very significant negative correlation with the total score of sensory evaluation (R2 = 0.94). In conclusion, this work demonstrated that PCA and RA as an objective protocol had great potential in predicting the sensory quality of noodles.
