Digestible lysine levels in diets for laying Japanese quails

-The objective of this study was to estimate the digestible lysine requirement of Japanese quails in the egg-laying phase. A total of 336 female Japanese quails (Coturnix coturnix japonica) of average initial age of 207 days were distributed in a completely randomized experimental design, composed of 6 treatments (lysine levels) with 7 replicates and 8 birds per experimental unit, with duration of 84 days. Experimental diets were formulated from a basal diet, with corn and soybean meal, with 2.800 kcal ME/kg and 203.70 g/kg crude protein, showing levels of 9.50; 10.00; 10.50; 11.00; 11.50; and 12.00 g/kg digestible lysine; diets remained isoprotein and isocaloric. The following variables were studied: feed intake (FI); lysine intake (LI); egg production per bird per day (EPBD); egg production per bird housed (EPBH); production of marketable eggs (PME); egg weight (EW); egg mass (EM); utilization efficiency of lysine for egg mass production (UELEM); feed conversion per mass (FCEM); feed conversion per dozen eggs (FCDZ); bird availability (BA); percentages of yolk (Y), albumen (A) and shell (S); specific egg weight (SW); nitrogen ingested (NI); nitrogen excreted (NE); and nitrogen balance (NB). Significant effect was only observed for LI, EW, EM, UELEM, FCEM, Y, A and SW. The digestible lysine level estimated in diets for laying Japanese quails is 11.20 g digestible lysine/kg diet, corresponding to an average daily intake of 272.23 mg lysine.

Values of egg weight, egg length, egg width, eggshape index, eggshell weight, eggshell ratio, eggshell thickness, eggshell surface area, unit surface area and egg volume were determined as 40.14 g, 49.47 mm, 37.89 mm, 0.76%, 6.48 g, 16%, 0.54 mm, 65.69 cm 2 , 0.11 g/cm 2 and 38.21 cm 3 , respectively. In addition, values of yolk weight, yolk height, yolk width, yolk index, yolk ratio, albumen height, albumen width, albumen length, albumen weight, albumen index, yolk/albumen ratio and haugh unit were found as 13.58 g, 14.99 mm, 40.64 mm, 37%, 33%, 4.77 mm, 62.97 mm, 80.07 mm, 21.62 g, 6.7%, 68% and 74.97%, respectively. According to the results determined in this study, all most all external quality traits of the egg were changed at the significant levels depending on the change occurred in the egg weight. The results indicated that egg weight influences external egg quality traits of quinea fowl. The positive correlations obtained among the egg quality traits indicated that they can be improved phenotypically through selection. Bu amaçla toplam 100 adet Beç tavuğu yumurtası kullanılmıştır. Araştırma Akdeniz Üniversitesi Ziraat Fakültesi Zootekni Bölümü Hayvancılık Birimi'inde yürütülmüştür. Yumurta ağırlığı, yumurta uzunluğu, yumurta eni, şekil indeksi, kabuk ağırlığı, kabuk oranı, kabuk kalınlığı, kabuk yüzey alanı, birim yüzey alanı ve yumurta hacmi sırasıyla 40.14 g, 49.47 mm, 37.89 mm, %0.76, 6.48 g, %16, 0.54 mm, 65.69 cm 2 , 0.11 g/cm 2 ve 38.21 cm 3 olarak bulunmuştur. Ayrıca, sarı ağırlığı, sarı yüksekliği, sarı genişliği, sarı indeksi, sarı oranı, ak yüksekliği, ak genişliği, ak uzunluğu, ak ağırlığı, ak indeksi, sarı/ak oranı ve haugh birimi de sırasıyla 13.58 g, 14.99 mm, 40.64 mm, %37, %33, 4.77 mm, 62.97 mm, 80.07 mm, 21.62 g, %6.7, %68 ve %74.97 olarak hesaplanmıştır. Yumurta ağırlığındaki değişmeye bağlı olarak yumurtanın dış kalite özellikleri önemli derecede değişmiş ve yumurta ağırlığı dış kalite özelliklerini etkilemiştir. Yumurta kalite özellikleri arasında ortaya çıkan önemli korelasyonlar bu özelliklerin fenotipik olarak seleksiyonla iyileştirilebileceğini göstermiştir.

This study was designed to investigate the effects of dietary oregano essential oils on 150 30-week-old Hy-Line Layers' productive performance, egg quality characteristics, cecal microbiota, digestive enzyme activities, mucosa structure of the duodenum and jejunum and glucose and small peptides transporters expression in the duodenum and jejunum. All hens were allocated into one of five different groups: negative control (NC; basal diet only), antibiotics control (CS; basal diet plus 100 mg/kg of 10% colistin sulfate) and treatments I, II, and III (basal diet supplemented with 50, 100 and 150 mg/kg oregano essential oils, respectively). The results showed that the laying rate, average egg weight, feed conversion ratio and the activities of amylase and trypsin were significantly improved by a diet supplemented with 100 mg/kg oregano essential oils (P < 0.01). The addition of oregano essential oils increased the number of intestinal Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus significantly (P < 0.01), whereas the number of intestinal Escherichia coli and Salmonella was significantly (P < 0.01) decreased. The addition of 100 mg/kg oregano essential oils increased duodenum villus height (P > 0.05), significantly increased duodenum villus-height-tocrypt-depth ratios (P < 0.01) and decreased crypt depth in the duodenum (P < 0.05). Furthermore, the glucose transporter 2 (GLUT2), peptide transporter 1 (PepT1) and sodium-glucose cotransporter 1 (SGLT1) gene expression levels in the duodenum and jejunum were significantly increased in laying hens on a diet supplemented with 100 mg/kg oregano essential oils (P < 0.01). However, egg weight, relative eggshell weight, yolk index and Haugh unit value were not significantly affected by the addition of oregano essential oils (P > 0.05).
