Quantification of aluminium in soil of the Solimões Formation, Acre State, Brazil

Abstract: The variety of soils in the State of Acre is wide and their chemical profiles are still not fully understood. The nature of the material of origin of these soils is indicated by the high aluminium (Al) content, commonly associated with high calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) contents. The study objective was to use different methods to quantify Al in soils from toposequences formed from material of a sedimentary nature originating from the Solimões Formation, in Acre, Brazil. Trenches were opened at three distinc… Show more

“…The predominance of negative charges in Amazonian soils is highly influenced by the functional groups of organic matter (Bernini et al 2013). Humidified organic matter (represented by TOC) increased the density of negative electrical charge in the more superficial horizons of the studied profiles, specially in Profiles 3 and 5, which were derived from sedimentary materials.…”

“…It is interesting to note the presence of kaolinite in coexistence with gibbsite in the samples, such that the presence of Al oxides is conditioned to the low activity of silica (Bernini et al 2013). Kaolinite persists in many environments as a relic of the initial cycles of weathering or comes from poorly drained sites distributed in the microstructure of the soil (White and Dixon 2002).…”

“…Other properties of the two soils are presented in Table 1. These soils typically contain high levels of Fe and Al oxides (e.g., Bernini et al, 2013; Tsai et al, 2007) and are widespread in South Africa and other tropical and subtropical regions of the world.…”

“…The process of release of Al ions from octahedral co-ordination in minerals through weathering processes [12,19] usually depends on H + ion concentration. In acid soils below pH 4.3, Al ions combine with water and solubilizes to form Al (H 2 O) 6…”
